Tired of Bloating, Gas, and Stomach Pain? Low FODMAP May Be for You!

For years, I suffered with stomach issues. After multiple tests, endoscopes, colonoscopies, and trips back and forth to the doctor, it was discovered I had a bacterial infection throughout my colon, colitis, and a hiatal hernia from ignoring symptoms and brushing my pains aside for so long. I had vitamin deficiencies, extremely low energy, and felt like the biggest slug on the planet. Junior year of college, I was given a packet of papers at 20 years old, and was told to follow an elimination diet. What is that??

Not only was I overwhelmed and scared by this new diagnosis, but I had no guidance as to how to do this. I felt restricted, frustrated, and alone in this journey. I lived in a dorm room and did not have many resources available to me. I was the only one of my friends not participating in social events, not eating at the school cafeteria, and was the only one who could identify every bathroom on the school campus. I felt like an outsider.

I did not have a professional to seek guidance from on this journey. It was horrifying. My source was this one packet of information. With the support of my sister, I made do, but on a very restricted diet. I followed that paper to a T, because I did not have the resources that allowed me to get through the process with more variety.

I ate the same thing every day and went from having a pot of coffee a day to not a single drop. Talk about doing a 180 in your life. I was afraid I was going to mess it up. I couldn’t take the pain any longer, so I embarked on my journey.

Little did I know that this was a pivotal moment in my life. Five years later, and I am healthier and stronger than I have ever been. I’m a fitness instructor, a Registered Dietitian, and a musician loving life and embracing every opportunity that comes my way. AND I have the energy to do so! Sure, symptoms come to surface when I incorporate foods that I have identified as my colitis triggers, but never did I know how the Low FODMAP Elimination diet process would change my life…and now I want to change yours.
