What is a PTA? How long did you go to school? How are you different from a PT?
Since I began working at Caruso Physical Therapy and Nutrition I have been asked by many patient’s how my schooling is different from a PT or what exactly can a PTA do.
A PTA is a Physical Therapist Assistant who has earned an associates degree from an accredited program and passed a licensing board exam. Most accredited programs are 2 years or just slightly longer and include clinical education. Typically PTAs complete 3 clinical rotations that total around 16 40 hour weeks of on-site instruction with a practicing PT or PTA. Every 2 years in the state of New Jersey the licenses are renewed and licensees are required to have 30 hours of continuing education credits.
As a PTA, I am not licensed to perform an initial evaluation or create patient care plans, that has to be done by Danielle or Ricky. However, I can implement the treatment plans that they have created as part of that evaluation process, assist you through your exercises, perform manual stretches, and assist you during balance activities.
I also provide assistance to Danielle and Ricky by observing and documenting data as part of my contribution to the progress notes and re-evaluations. I often collaborate with Danielle and Ricky when making changes to the treatment session to promote increased function.
Lastly, I can provide you with education about your condition, goals, or treatment plan.
