Hydration, Hydration, HYDRATION!

As the summer heat sets in, it’s the perfect time for a quick reminder about one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for your health: water.

Hydration plays a vital role in everything from regulating body temperature to supporting digestion, energy levels, and even your mood. During the warmer months, we lose more fluids through sweat — sometimes without realizing it — which increases our risk for dehydration.

Did you know water can help aid in the function of your liver? Your liver filters out toxins, and is a key piece in nutrient absorption. No need for a trendy and expensive “cleanse”. Your body already has the perfect and affordable filtration system: your liver and WATER!

Here are a few quick hydration tips to help you stay well all summer long:

Drink consistently throughout the day – Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. By the time you feel thirst, your body is already mildly dehydrated.

Carry a reusable water bottle – Having water within arm’s reach makes it easier to sip throughout the day, especially if you’re outdoors or active. Believe it or not, little things like the size of the bottle, whether you use a straw or not, keeping the water cold or hot, CAN matter.

There is not a magical way to drink water; however, executive functioning tactics can make or break whether someone follows through with a behavior.

This is your sign to get that fancy water bottle if it entices you to add water in. It will get you started, will build confidence that you indeed CAN drink water, and an object in motion does stay in motion!

Adjust for heat and activity – If you’re exercising or spending time in the sun, you’ll need even more fluids to stay properly hydrated. You may also need additional nutrients and vitamins to support hydration, such as electrolytes.

Remember, hydration isn’t just about quenching thirst—it’s about supporting your entire body, especially in the heat. If you’re not sure how much water is right for you, schedule a consult—that’s what your friendly neighborhood RDN is here for!
